Wivenhoe, Fingringhoe and Rowhedge Ferry: website terms of use

1. About us

This website, wivenhoerowhedgeferry.co.uk, is run by Wivenhoe, Fingringhoe and Rowhedge Ferry Community Interest Company (“we”, “us” or “the ferry”). We are a community interest company registered in England and Wales, company number 06631859. Our registered office is Three Chimneys, 3 Elmstead Road, Wivenhoe, Colchester, CO7 9HX.

The ferry is run entirely by unpaid volunteers and is licensed by Tendring District Council.

These terms set out the rules for using this website. By using the site you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

These terms cover the website only. Travelling on the ferry is covered by our passenger safety rules, and a private hire is covered by the details we confirm when you book.

2. Using this website

You may use this site for personal, non-commercial purposes, for example to check the timetable, find out about volunteering, make a private hire enquiry or contact us.

You must not:

  • use the site in a way that breaks the law or causes harm to anyone
  • send us anything through the site that is offensive, threatening, defamatory or deliberately misleading
  • try to gain unauthorised access to the site, the server it runs on or any connected system
  • introduce viruses or other harmful code, or use our forms to send spam
  • copy large parts of the site or use automated tools to collect its content without our permission

We may suspend or restrict access to all or part of the site at any time, for example for maintenance. We do not promise that the site will always be available or free from errors.

3. Timetable and service information

The ferry depends on tides, weather, river conditions and the availability of volunteer crew. The times shown on this site, including the timetable, the Next Ferry page and calendar downloads, are our plan at the time of publishing. They are not a guarantee.

We may change, delay or cancel crossings at short notice, including on the day, if the skipper decides it is not safe or practical to run. We try to update the site and our Facebook page when this happens, but we cannot promise to do so every time. Please check before you travel, especially in poor weather.

Tide times on the site come from a third-party source and are for general information only. Do not use them for navigation.

Fares, passenger limits and landing points (including the current closure of the Fingringhoe landing) may change. We keep this information as accurate as we can, but it may sometimes be out of date.

4. Private hire

The private hire details on this site, including prices, are a guide. Sending us an enquiry does not make a booking. A hire is only confirmed when we confirm it to you in writing, for example by email, with the date, times, price and any conditions.

Private hires depend on tides, weather and crew availability, and the passenger limit on our licence applies. If we have to cancel a confirmed hire for safety reasons, we will offer you another date or a full refund of anything you have paid.

5. Forms and mailing list

The site has a contact form for general and private hire enquiries, a form to register interest in volunteering, and a sign-up form for our mailing list. Please give accurate details so we can reply to you.

Our mailing list is run through EmailOctopus. If you sign up, we will send you news about the ferry. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any of our emails.

Registering interest in volunteering through the site does not create any contract between you and us.

Our privacy notice explains how we use the information you send us.

6. Content and photos

The text, photos, logo and other content on this site belong to us or to people who have given us permission to use them. You may view, download or print pages for your own personal use, and you may share links to the site. You must not copy or reuse our content, including photos, for any other purpose without asking us first.

If you think something on the site uses your work, or a photo shows you and you would like it removed, please contact us and we will deal with it promptly.

The site links to, and includes content from, other websites and services, for example Facebook, Google Maps, Google Calendar, essex-tides.com and EmailOctopus. We do not control these services and are not responsible for their content or for how they handle your information. Their own terms and privacy policies apply.

You are welcome to link to any page on our site, as long as you do so fairly and do not suggest that we endorse you or your organisation without our agreement.

8. Our liability

We provide this site free of charge for general information. We take care to keep it accurate, but we cannot promise that everything on it is complete, correct or up to date.

As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for any loss or damage that results from using the site or relying on information on it, including information about a crossing that is later changed or cancelled. We do not promise that the site is free from viruses or other harmful code, so please use your own security software.

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability where it would be unlawful to do so. This includes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence or the negligence of our volunteers, and liability for fraud. Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer.

9. Privacy and cookies

We handle any personal information you give us in line with UK data protection law. Our privacy notice explains what we collect, why we collect it, how long we keep it and your rights. You can read it at [link to privacy notice].

The site uses cookies and similar technology, including Google services that measure how the site is used and a service that filters spam from our forms. Our privacy notice explains which cookies we use and how you can control them.

10. Changes, law and contact

We may update these terms from time to time. They were last updated on 15 October 2026. Please check them each time you use the site.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales will deal with any dispute. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts.

If you have a problem with the site or these terms, please tell us first so we can try to put it right. You can contact us through the form at wivenhoerowhedgeferry.co.uk/contact or by post at our registered office.
